In 2009 – 2010, San Antonio’s Zoning Commission and City Council unanimously approved the re-zoning of Cool Crest as a historically significant property, due in part to the uniqueness of the concrete work that comprises the foundation of the two 18-hole courses.  This designation effectively limited the types of structural changes that could be made to it upon its restoration and re-opening.

Here are some of the features of the courses that may help you decide whether you or members of your group would like to play the historic courses:

  • Both courses have very narrow walkways and are not conducive for walkers or wheelchair access.
  • Both courses have steps that will have to be navigated between holes and within the playing of specific holes.
  • The 1959 course specifically has many steps that require care when traversing. Also, a few holes do not have guardrails on some of the paths have drops on curbs or landscaped areas.
  • Both courses do have benches between holes to rest but may not be sufficient for immobile individuals.

However, our staff is always willing to assist any physically challenged person in helping make their Cool Crest experience a pleasant and memorable one.  Although we regret that we may not be able to accommodate every person, we will make every reasonable attempt to do so. If you cannot play a round of golf at Cool Crest we always welcome individuals and groups to come sit on the patio or our new Metzger Biergarten and enjoy the scenery, vintage music and a cold refreshment.
